It's called a 'pair of pants' because it derives from the word 'pantaloons' in which there was a separate piece of clothing for each leg. You can find out this and many more conundrums, such as but not limited to, why do we call them fingertips but not toe tips (because you tip things over with your fingers, who would have guessed) while sitting in the comfy chair at NY Mike's Tattoo studio. Just remember to wear pants.
